DescriptionA set of two vintage U.S. silver half dollar coins, including: 1 90% silver 1963 U.S. Franklin half dollar 1 90% silver 1964 U.S. Kennedy half dollar These two coins are in Mint State Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with no wear and strong luster (see pictures for examples). Prior to 1965, half dollars were made out of a 90% silver alloy, so each coin contains .900 fine silver. The obverse side of the Franklin half dollar features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, notable eccentric and Founding Father. The reverse side of the coin features the Liberty Bell. The Franklin half dollar series was the predecessor of the Kennedy half dollar series. As some historians noted, Franklin himself would have disapproved of the coin, as he opposed featuring portraits of men on the first American coins and instead favored coin designs featuring thought-inspiring proverbs. The obverse side of the Kennedy half dollar features President John F. Kennedy, 35th president of the U.S. These coins were originally produced to honor Kennedy following his assassination. Within hours of Kennedy's death, the director of the U.S. Mint began evaluating the possibility of featuring Kennedy on the half dollar or quarter. The choice of coin was offered to Jacqueline Kennedy - she suggested Kennedy replace Franklin on the half dollar as she did not want to displace George Washington from the quarter. Specifications: Each coin measures 30.6mm in diameter, weighs 12.5g, and is made of .900 fine silver. Each coin will be secured in an archival-quality Mylar flip, and the two flips will be secured in a corrugated cardboard safety mailer. If you have any questions about these coins (or about coin collecting in general), please send me (O.S.C.) a message and I'll be happy to respond.
